“Let the Phone Ring”, Says Sophie Louise
If you’ve never heard of Las Vegas-born Sophie Louise Hansen – better known by her musical moniker, Sophie Louise – it’s time you did. Now a newly-minted Nashvillian, the 21-year-old artist has been making waves with her fresh form of alternative folk. We talked to her about life, music, and her latest single “Let the Phone Ring”.
How did you get involved in music?
When I was a little girl, I loved to sing along to the Phantom of the Opera. I didn’t sound great at first, but my parents knew that I was passionate about singing, so they eventually signed me up for lessons.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
I love classic rock – Elton John, David Bowie, and Queen, to name a few. My main modern influences are Lorde, Billie Eilish, and Lana Del Rey.
When did you start writing your own songs?
When I was in my mid-teens I picked up guitar and piano. Eventually I got good enough to write my own riffs and things. I found that my voice catered to an alternative, folky kind of sound, so I just rolled with it. That style really speaks to me.
Why the move to Nashville?
I needed a change of scenery. Plus, there is a lot more opportunity in Nashville for singer-songwriters. It was a difficult transition at first, especially mid-pandemic, but I’m happy to be here. It’s an amazing city and I’m constantly motivated to become a better writer and musician.
What is life like outside of music?
I work as a hostess at a restaurant downtown and I’m currently studying Communications online at University of Nevada-Reno. Occasionally I’ll go out with friends or drop by a local venue for a “writer’s round” and play a few of my original tunes. Most of the time I enjoy writing and relaxing at home with my cats, Dolly and Cordelia.
Sophie’s latest single, “Let the Phone Ring”, is a hauntingly beautiful ride inside the layered complexity of loneliness. Her dreamy vocals and delicate chords convey a genuine longing for more than just a message at the tone.
Tell us about the inspiration behind your new single.
“Let the Phone Ring” was triggered by a random call from someone in my past. I found myself asking, ‘Why am I answering?’. It’s about moving on and resisting the urge to fall back into old, unhealthy habits.
Are you working on any other projects?
Aside from my solo gig, I’ve been collaborating with some up-and-coming producers in the Nashville scene; mainly pop and EDM types of projects. It’s been a great way to meet other artists and make connections. I love working with people who are as passionate about music as I am.
Sophie Louise plans to keep perfecting her craft – writing and putting out new music on the regular – and building a base of loyal fans along the way. Her dream: return home to Las Vegas and perform on stage at Life Is Beautiful Music & Art Festival.
If she keeps dropping tunes like “Let the Phone Ring”, she’ll be there soon.
